My data feed definition is an ongoing stream of structured data that provides the user with up to date information from a range of sources.

A direct feed of data or data feed may be streamed continuously or mined on demand by way of a feed manager. Data feeds make it possible to have new content or updated data fed into a computer, server or mobile device as soon as it is published. The same data feed technology is utilised to supply data to other software.

Starting to make sense what a data feed is and how it works?

Well, if you’re still unsure consider the Facebook News Feed. This is one of the most widely used examples of a data feed.

The Facebook News Feed pulls items from range of sources including, posts, status updates, photos, videos, links, apps and likes.

The data is collected and analysed and then appears as a direct feed or list of up to the minute information in your Facebook News Feed.

There are many other feeds. News Feeds, Stock Market Live Feeds, Sports Feeds, Content Publication Feeds and Twitter timelines all function as a live market feeds.


How a Data Feed Works

Data feeds are often described by the way in which they are delivered to a device, server, website, etc.

Another commonly used data feed is an RSS feed. This one uses an XML based format to deliver web content from a wide range of sources to one target destination, which could be a user account or a website.

There is then an Aggregator or RSS Reader which summarises the feed and puts it into a readable format. An RSS feed is a particularly useful tool for supplying and sharing high level content to blogs and new hubs.

So now we have the feed definition out of the way, here comes the interesting part!

Data feeds can also be used to collect and mine information about user data.

As we mentioned above there are many different types of direct feed. In this new age of data there are a whole range of ways for potentially monetising all of the different types of data available on the web today.

What we are looking at here is for the potential affiliate marketing benefits of data feeds and how you can use them to bring repeat sales and conversions to your business.

Below are two of the most lucrative types of direct feed that can bring huge affiliate marketing benefits – one for B2C marketing and the other for B2B.

Credit Card Purchasers Data

With a data feed we can also mine for user data based on users who have opted in for third party marketing offers. This typically occurs when a user makes an online purchase with their credit card.

  • They are computer knowledgeable and access their emails regularly

All you would need to do is monitor or upload the new list of contacts each day as they go into your sending application. Then you can just sit back and watch as the active users on the list go to your site each day.

What we are going to look at now is a step by step method for utilising a daily data feed in your email marketing strategy.

#Step 1: Set Up a VPS plus Interspire

There are many email sending applications that you could use for sending emails to your data feed.

That said for the scale of emailing involved in this method none of them come close to Interspire.

#Step 2: Set Up a Series of Two or Three Autoresponders

Once you have your VPS and sending app at the ready you will need to set up a series of 2 or three autoresponders.

These will be used to separate the openers and clickers from the inactive users in your daily feed of email data.

The first email will send to the entire list. Then you will need to set the second autoresponder to go out only to the opens either the day after or two days after the initial email went out. Then set up the third email to go, either two or three days later again.

Others may offer the data feed by sending straight to your Dropbox. This also works fine. However, you will have to download the files and then upload them to the VPS manually. The problem with doing it this way is it can be time consuming. Plus the repeated downloading of large data files will fill up your computer’s memory.

#Step 4: Market Your Brand’s Products or Affiliate Offers

Once this process has run for a few days you will start to see a good sized list of openers and clickers.

Now is the time to start introducing your product and affiliate offers. It’s up to you how you decide to do this but the important thing to remember is:

  • Do not send out any mailers with links in the first 1 or 2 autoresponders
  • Only send your offers to the users that open and click
  • NEVER repeat email those that don’t open or respond to your emails – this is Spam and can get you into a lot of trouble so be mindful of your email marketing methods.
  • NEVER send users to your main business domain – it’s best to send them a link to an opt in page in your 3rd or 4th email before you start sending direct links to your business domain.

Here are a few other email marketing tips to keep your list active and always growing:

  • Don’t be too pushy with your sales emails. The more that your users trust you the more likely that they will stay active with your brand for a long time. One way to ensure that you build a strong relationship is to set up a blog. Then email them high level niche relevant content. Once you establish yourself as an authority they will trust you enough to want to make purchases.
  • Give your list more choices. Set up a landing page to give your users the option to opt in for more emails. Here you can ask them to specify the frequency of emails (daily, weekly, or monthly newsletters).

  2. Interesting article, i never thought about using a data feed, but it sounds like a lot potential to be had. With clean, verified data it must also be benficial to your sending reputation?

    1. That’s right – a good data provider will remove all inactive emails, misspellings, and addresses that typically don’t yield high open rates (abuse@, admin@, support@ etc). Then all you need to do is work on the openers and clickers and your server will keep it’s reputation where you want it.

The idea here is generating geo specific content that you can leverage for SEO, as well as for reaching out to your offline network.If your catering specializes in a certain cuisine look for a niche social network like FoodTube.net and scope out a group with in that deals with your cuisine. network like hell and maybe score a few friends and links!Also look for local restaurant or food critics that blog and ask them to write a review of your work.
